Former MP William Chepkut.

To residents of the Ainabkoi constituency, William Chepkut could have been the most accessible politician yet of their time.

To friends and relatives, Chepkut could have been the perfect definition of an amiable, humorous and down-to-earth man who mingled freely with anyone at any time.

But to Chepkut himself, he was the only soul alive.

That is how he described himself. And for sure, he could be right.

Oftentimes, while serving as MP for Ainabkoi between 2017 to 2022, Chepkut would share events of his engagements with residents of his constituency on social media.

Always dressed in a three-piece suit, he graced weddings in his area during which he burnt the dance floor with brides and bridegrooms as they celebrated their day.

He attended funeral ceremonies and mourned with the bereaved. Chepkut was many times present at church functions where he worshipped with locals.

Unlike his contemporaries, one striking thing about his visit to rural areas is that he always boarded a motorbike.

If he was not attending events, Chepkut would make impromptu visits to homesteads. He never minded sharing a cup of tea with hosts regardless of the humble nature of their homes.

At times, he could be pictured sitting on the ground amidst a group of women having a chat on issues affecting them.

All that, he did with an unmatched passion.

Sadly, Chepkut has rested.

He breathed his last Saturday morning,  the family confirmed.

Family sources say he collapsed in his house and was rushed to Mediheal hospital parklands where he was pronounced dead.

He has been unwell for some time and was admitted to the hospital between late last year and early this year.

The former MP served the constituency between 2017 to 2022. He was elected as an independent candidate.

In 2022, his bid to defend the seat as an Independent candidate again flopped.

He lost to Samwel Chepkonga of UDA party.

Chepkut served as the personal assistant of the late Nicholas Biwott, who was a powerful minister during the late President Daniel Moi's tenure and later ventured into politics.
