The government has dismissed media reports that it ha withdrawn former President Daniel Moi's cars and staff.

In a statement on Friday, State House Comptroller Kinuthia Mbugua said the Moi's benefits ceased on the day of his death on February 4, 2020 in accordance with the law.

"The benefits of a retired President are clearly spelt out in the Presidential Benefits Act, 2003 with section 5 specifically stating that pensions and other benefits of a retired president (which include cars and staff) are to be enjoyed only during his lifetime," Mbugua said.

He was reacting to reports by a local daily that said Ruto had withdrawn Moi's cars and staff assigned to him as part of his retirement benefits.

If anything, Mbugua said the withdrawal was legal and it happened before President William Ruto assumed office.

"Pensions and other benefits entitled to former President Daniel arap Moi ceased on February 4, 2020 in compliance with the provisions of the Presidential Benefits Act, 2003."

Kinuthia demanded an apology from the media outlet that ran the article terming it malicious and misleading.

"We, therefore, take great exception to the story and demand an apology and retraction of the same."

Moi had 30 members of staff and a monthly pension and two four-wheel vehicles which were replaceable after every three years.
