The Foreign Press Association, Africa, has called upon the government of Kenya to "fully and conclusively" investigate the killing of the Pakistani journalist, Arshad Sharif.

In a statement on Monday, FPA said getting to the cause and culprits involved will assure foreign journalists of their safety.

The group sent a message of condolences to the family, assuring them of its support during this difficult period.

"The Foreign Press Association, Africa stands with his family in this trying moment, even as it urges the government of Kenya to use every means at its disposal to dig up and unravel the mystery behind his killing," it said.

The Association said the events leading to the journalist's murder were alarming.

"Sharif's death has robbed the media fraternity globally of a dedicated and fortnight journalist, who lived up to his calling," it said.

FPA pointed out that journalists and other media workers around the world needed to be protected from any threats, violence, arbitrary detention and death.

"The media plays a pivotal role in shaping the way people see the world," it added.

Sharif was killed on Sunday after an officer shot him in the head.

Police said it was a tragic case of mistaken identity after the car Sharif was travelling in allegedly breached a random roadblock along the Nairobi-Magadi highway.

This resulted in a chase and shooting that left Sharif dead and his driver injured.

The Kenya Editors' Guild (KEG) has also requested quick investigations and arrest of the responsible persons.
