Most parts of the country likely to experience sunny days - Met

The department released a seven-day weather forecast on Tuesday.

Kenya Meteorological Department has said most parts of the country will experience sunny days.

According to a seven-day weather forecast released on Tuesday, rainfall is expected over some parts of the Highlands West of the Rift Valley.

Director of meteorological services Edward Muriuki said rainfall is also expected in the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central Rift Valley, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Coast and North-eastern Kenya.

He said the average daytime (maximum) temperatures are likely to be high (more than 30°C ) over the Coast, North-Western and North-Eastern Kenya as well as over some parts of the Highlands West of the Rift Valley.

The average nighttime (minimum) temperatures are likely to be low (less than 10°C ) over some parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley.

"The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Central and South Rift Valley (Kisii, Nyamira, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, West-Pokot, Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Busia, Migori, Baringo, Nakuru and Narok Counties)," he said.

"These areas are likely to be generally sunny,  afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur over few places." 

Muriuki added that nights are likely to be partly cloudy though showers may occur over a few places.

The maximum (day-time) temperatures are likely to drop to about 23°C  in Eldoret but may rise to 32°C in Kisumu.

Minimum (night-time) temperatures are expected to be as low as 8°C in Narok while in Suba they may be as high as 22°C 

Muriuki said in North-Western Kenya (Turkana and Samburu counties) the days are expected to be generally sunny and nights partly cloudy.

However, occasional morning rains and night showers may occur over a few places during the second half of the forecast period.

The maximum (day-time) temperatures are likely to be as high as 36°C  in Lodwar but may dropto 25°C in Maralal.

He said Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi County) (Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi and Nairobi Counties), the first half of the forecast period is likely to be generally sunny and dry.

Nights are likely to be partly cloudy.

During the second half of the forecast period intermittent cloudiness, at times, accompanied by light rains, is expected in the morning giving way to sunny intervals.

Afternoon and night showers are likely to occur over a few places.

Muriuki said the maximum (day-time) temperatures are likely not to exceed 31oC in Thika while in Nyahururu they may be as low as 22°C 

Minimum (night-time) temperatures are expected to drop to 04°C  in Nyahururu while in Thika they may peak at 17°C 

He said in North-Eastern Kenya (Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo counties), morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers are expected over a few places in Mandera, Wajir and Marsabit counties during the first half of the forecast period.

The director added that South-eastern lowlands (Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita-Taveta Counties), days are expected to be sunny and nights partly cloudy.

The maximum (day-time) temperatures are likely to be as high as 33°C  in Voi but may be as low as 25°C in Ngong.

The minimum (night-time) temperatures are expected to drop to 13°C  in Ngong while Voi may experience warmer temperatures of up to 21°C 

The Coast (Mombasa, Tana-River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale counties), days are expected to be sunny and nights partly cloudy.

However, occasional morning showers may occur over a few places during the first half of the forecast period.

The Maximum (day-time) temperatures are likely to drop to about 29°C  in Mtwapa while in Lamu they may be as high as 32°C.

Minimum (night-time) temperatures are expected to be as low as 22°C in Mtwapa but in Lamu they may rise to 25°C.
