More children are subjected to child labour in urban areas than rural areas, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics says.
In a report released on the data of Women and Men in Kenya 2022, they found that working children, as of 2019, were of five to 17 years.
Between the ages of five and nine, majority of working children exist in urban areas with boys being the most exploited.
“Girls of five to nine years working in rural areas constitute 48 per cent while those in urban areas are 50 per cent. Boys in that age bracket constitute 52 per cent in rural areas and 50 per cent in urban,” they found.
Of girls between 10 to 14 years, 45 per cent worked in rural areas while 45 per cent worked in urban areas.
Boys in that age bracket were 55 per cent in rural and 55 per cent in urban areas.
“Between the ages of 15 to 17 years, girls working in urban areas were 54 per cent while in rural areas, they were 44,” they found.
Boys in that age bracket were 46 per cent in urban areas and 56 per cent in rural areas.
