In Summary

  • •The region's hopes were dashed in the early State House vote when former Imenti Central MP Kubai Iringo and youthful politician Geoffrey Maina were defeated.
  • •The net effect is that the vote-rich region is now hoping that either ex-Kieni MP Kanini Kega or his former Ndaragwa counterpart Jeremiah Kioni sails through in Parliament on Thursday on the Jubilee party ticket.
President William Ruto addressing the UDA party parliamentary group meeting at State House Nairobi on Wednesday, November 16, 2022.

A well choreographed plan by UDA MPs from Rift Valley saw the Mt Kenya region miss much-sought slot at the East African Legislative Assembly.

The Star has established that the group of MPs ganged up on Wednesday to deny their counterparts from Mt Kenya a seat.

The region's hopes were dashed in the early State House vote when former Igembe Central MP Kubai Iringo and youthful politician Geoffrey Maina were defeated.

The net effect is that the vote-rich region is now hoping that either ex-Kieni MP Kanini Kega or his former Ndaragwa counterpart Jeremiah Kioni sails through in Parliament on Thursday on the Jubilee party ticket.

The Raila Odinga-led Azimio la Umoja Coalition had handed Jubilee one slot in a sharing formula that also saw Kalonzo Musyoka's Wiper party bag another post.

However, MPs are expected to have the final say when each of the bicameral Houses on Thursday conducts a vote by secret ballot on all the 27 nominees who were shortlisted.

President William Ruto's UDA outfit had on Wednesday early morning held a Parliamentary Group meeting at State House and held a secret ballot to pick the Kenya Kwanza preferred line up for the EALA slots.

Raila's ODM is also expected to come up with its list of preferred nominees ahead of the elections on Thursday.

Regardless of the line ups, the plenaries of the Senate and National Assembly will take a vote on the whole list of 27.

It has now emerged that a section of MPs from Rift Valley schemed on Tuesday night and lobbied their counterparts from Western Kenya, Ukambani and Coast to deny Mt Kenya any slot.

A sweep from Rift Valley saw ex-MPs Ziporah Kering, David Sankok elected during the State House vote.

The horse-trading also rewarded former Mombasa senator Hassan Omar, ex-nominated Senator Falhada Iman and former URP secretary general Fred Muteti.

A fallout emerging from the elections however, is threatening to spoil the party after Mt Kenya MPs protested and vowed to ensure that one of their own sails through in the plenaries.

"There is a strong wind of revolt unless the region gets at least a slot in UDA, as we speak we are caucusing to ensure we deliver that during the plenary vote,' said a Mt Kenya MP.

This suggests that the lawmakers might defy Ruto and ignore the State House line up settled upon on Wednesday.

They are pushing to vote for Maina irregardless of the State House outcome.

If push comes to shove, the Mt Kenya MPs are plotting to back Kega of Jubilee for the EALA post.

Kega is said to be enjoying considerable support compared to Kioni and ex-Wajir Woman Representative Ruth Mwaniki who is also in the Jubilee list.
