Rongai MP Paul Chebor has recommended that the stretch of the road covering the infamous Ngata Bridge black spot on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway be dualed to avert further fatal accidents.
In a statement shortly after the latest accident at the sport claimed eight lives and injured at least 20 other people, the MP said he has reached out to the Ministry of Roads and security agencies over the proposal.
"Our recommendation is that the road is redesigned to accommodate a dual from Soilo junction to Ngata Gate or Salgaa town because statistics indicate that this is the area that has registered the majority of fatal accidents," he said.
The accident on Tuesday involved a trailer and two 14-seater matatus; one which was travelling to Kapsabet while the other was heading towards the town.
The trailer which was heading to Nakuru reportedly lost its breaks, swerved to the right lane and rammed into the passenger vehicles.
The crash occurred at the same spot where three students from the nearby Rift Valley Technical Institute perished in a dawn accident on November 26.
It's also the same spot where former Chief Justice David Maraga was involved in a head-on collision while travelling to a church service on the morning of Saturday, December 22, 2018, in the company of his wife.
They both sustained slight injuries and were airlifted to Nairobi for treatment before being discharged.
"The spot has over the years turned out to be a death trap. We cannot continue to turn a blind eye to the matter anymore," the MP said.
The first-time legislator condoled with families of the deceased and wished the injured quick recovery.
He pledged to offer assistance as they go through the mourning and healing process.
"We will continue to issue more comprehensive statements as when we receive from other stakeholders in regards to this matter," he said.
