The body of a middle aged man was found with a slit throat on Saturday morning at Daraja Mbili in Kisii.

Villagers suspect Cyrus Monari, 35, and a former Kisii University clerk was slaughtered by a marauding gang.

Residents said he was doing small businesses and other menial jobs to eke a living.

His landlord, Lawrence Ratemo, said Monari appeared to be nursing depression.

"He just walked out in the middle of the night to no where in particular," he said.

"He just walked out of the compound. Little did I know it was the last time I was seeing him alive."

Ratemo however described Monari as good gentle tenant.

"He often paid rent without delay. He had only told me he had severe malaria," he said.

Monari hailed from Ititi, Nyarenda, Marani.

Relatives said he had been relying on menial jobs to eke a living since his retrenchment in 2020 from the university.

"He was generally a good person and although he drunk occasionally, he was not known for any misdemeanor," Roda Nyanduko, the deceased's aunt said.

Nyanduko was preparing to head out to church on Saturday morning in Marani when she got a call that her grandson had been discovered dead.

She said the body had severe injuries, a sign he was murdered.

Grace Kwamboka, the deceased's sister, asked for a probe to help unravel the killing.

"We cry for justice, we want to know the circumstances that led to wanton killing of my brother," she said shedding tears.

Kwamboka said Monari was in a jovial mood when he visited her and little did she know that was his last visit.

Police have since launched a probe.
