Web browser Opera Mini was the most downloaded App from the google Play Store in the country in the past weekend.
The App’s developer Opera —which is Norwegian— said in a statement that the successful showing was due to its spirited campaign during the Fifa World Cup season dubbed “Shake and Win.”
The continent-wide downloading campaign saw football enthusiasts offered a chance to win more than $300,000 in prizes.
Users needed to only download the App [code named shake their phones] to potentially win airtime from popular providers, cash prizes, or brand-new phones.
It said more than 13 million people participated across the continent.
In Kenya, it said, more than 1,000,000 downloads were recorded and over 53,000 prizes were given.
In the continent, more than 1,000,000 got downloaded daily and more than 200,000 prizes were won.
The App is marketed as a “unique, data-saving browser built with the needs of Africans in mind.”
In recognition of the extremely high data costs on the continent, it allows users to save up to 90 per cent of their data.
Users during the campaign enjoyed the utility of an integrated messenger, free data and live scores of football games and news about the latest matches.
Jørgen Arnesen, the executive vice president in charge of mobile at Opera said they intend to improve the user experience of the App “to football fans, especially with the return of the Premier League just around the corner.”
The company says it has an Africa-first policy in which it develops “mobile products and services tailored first and foremost to the needs of the African consumer.”
“We’ll keep the ball rolling in 2023 as we continue to bring Kenyans updates and products that are fast, efficient, and focused on our users.”
