Police in Mwea West have expressed concern over the high number of suicide cases being reported in the sub-county.

Area police boss Wilson Koskei has revealed that the most affected are the youths of tender age.

He attributes the problem to indulgence in hard drugs and alcoholism thus calling for a stop to the substance abuse.

In addition, he has urged the youths to have a change of attitude and approach life with a positive mindset.

He said four suicide-related cases have already been reported within a period of four days with the most recent being a 26-year-old man who is alleged to have committed suicide at Kagio after his mother denied him money to buy rolls of bhang.

According to Kosgei, the deceased identified as Peter Mwangi is said to have shown up at his mother's home while inebriated to borrow money for use in buying rolls of the hard drug.

After she refused, there was a brief argument after which he is said to have angrily taken off to his rental house where he committed suicide by hanging himself.

Shocked area residents decried the rise in suicidal cases thus calling for intervention from both the national and local governments.

Susan Murigu, a local said many cases are occasioned by domestic-related violence, land feuds, economic hardships and abuse of hard drugs.
