The government has released Sh8,577,808,000 as payment to millions of Inua Jamii beneficiaries, ending months of agony for the elderly, orphans and disabled.

From Monday, 1,072,226 Inua Jamii cash transfer programme beneficiaries currently on payroll will start receiving their money.

In a statement from the director of Social Protection Judy Tuda on Wednesday, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection said the payment will cover the months of July, August, September and October.

Tuda noted that the payments will see each beneficiary get Sh8,000 disbursed through the Payment Service Providers (PSPs), beginning Monday, January 12.

At the same time, the government will disburse an additional Sh8,400,500 as complimentary top ups to 4,549 beneficiaries of the Nutrition Improvement through Cash and Health Education (NICHE).

This comes after concerns over delayed payments of the fund with the department of social protection saying that the delay had been occasioned by the National Treasury following transition protocols.

Since President William Ruto's Kenya Kwanza administration took office, the state has not disbursed cash meant for the vulnerable amid fears that the programme was facing closure.

T Inua Jamii programme under the Ministry of Labour targets orphans and vulnerable children; older persons and persons with severe disabilities.

Under the Inua Jamii programme, the beneficiaries are eligible to a Sh2000 monthly stipend.
