Police have been deployed at Nyali Primary School in Mombasa after parents raised an issue with the school administration.
Irate parents are expected to deliver a petition to the school demanding the eviction of the new deputy principal Toney Ogunga later in the day.
Last Tuesday, learning was disrupted at the school after a section of parents and stakeholders stormed the school demanding that Ogunga is evicted.
They claimed that he was employed without following the laid down processes.
This morning the principal locked himself inside the office.
He locked out Nyali OCPD Daniel Mumasaba and Muslim for Human Rights (MUHURI) chairman Khalif Khelef who wanted to have a talk with him.
Last week, learning was disrupted at the school after a section of parents stormed the school demanding the removal of the new acting principal.
Officers from Nyali Police station were forced to intervene to ensure peace prevails.
The parents, accompanied by other stakeholders and officials from Muslim for Human Rights said Ogunga should vacate the office immediately.
Nyali School is owned by the Mombasa Parents Club members. The parents said Ogunga’s recruitment went against the club’s constitution.
According to the parents, they were informed of Ogunga’s recruitment through the school chairman Benjamin Gitonga’s New Year circular.
Ogunga is said to have been appointed as a new deputy principal, despite the fact that the school already has two deputy principals; Omar Babu and Sarah Kaleli.
Last June, former school principal John Kombo left to pursue other interests and the school’s board of management appointed Babu to act as the new principal.
Kaleli continued being his deputy.
However, the parents said Ogunga was recruited as deputy principal and has gone ahead to assume the role of the acting school principal.
A row has been brewing over the recruitment of a new principal since the exit of Kombo.
Attempts by the board to recruit a new principal were thwarted after a section of members went to court to block the process, saying it was not open and competitive as required.
