Eight charged with graft in Nakuru market tender award

Former Nakuru county Chief Officer in the Department of Trade, Edith Kimani (left) who is also the daughter of former Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri together with eighty others in a Nakuru court on Tuesday, where they were charged with economic crime by fraudulently awarding a Sh7.9 million tender.

Eight suspects involved in the Kiratina Market tender were on Tuesday released on bond terms after being charged at Nakuru anti-corruption court.

The suspects are alleged to have engaged in irregularities of Sh7.9 million in the construction of a shade in Menengai East.

They include former and current county employees.

Appearing before Chief Justice Bildad Ochieng, the eight included Edith Kimani, Jackson Maingi, Nickson Kibet, Anne Njeri, Florence Karanja and the directors of Levki Contractors Limited; Edith Maina, Jane Mwaura and John Murage.

Kimani is charged with failing to comply with guidelines relating to procurement on February 24, 2017.

Kibet, Njeri, and Karanja are alleged to have, on diverse dates between February 24 and March 9 2017 been members of the Tender Processing Committee, unlawfully recommended the award of the tender to Levki Contractors.

Further, Wangari, Njoki, and Murage were charged with fraudulently acquiring Sh3,250,885 despite not being qualified for the tender award.

Separately, Murage was charged with unlawfully preparing a form of agreement in the tender in Maina's name without her authorization.

They pleaded innocent to all counts of corruption-related offences presented before them and prayed to be released on bond.

The suspects were released on bond terms with Kimani, Maingi, Wangari, Njoki and Murage directed to pay Sh600,000 bond, with a surety of a similar amount or pay an alternative cash bail of Sh300,000.

On the other hand, Kibet, Njeri and Wanjiku were released on Sh200,000 bond and a surety of the same amount or a cash bail of Sh100,000.

The pretrial was scheduled for February 14.
