Rhoda Mutheu Musee a 14-year-old girl from Waita in Mwingi Central has no hopes of joining Form One despite attaining 377 marks.

She received a calling letter to Mulango Girls Secondary School in Kitui, but there are no signs of her going to school due to lack of school fees.

Rhoda is the fourth born in a family of five children and is a partial orphan.

Her mother, Martha Mutua, said that despite her daughter scoring a recommendable mark, she could not take her to school.

Martha who has been widowed for the last 9 years, said her first two children recently joined the university, the third born is in Form Three while their last born is in Grade 6.

"I depend on farming, but the rain has badly failed us," she said.

She said she initially used her donkey to fetch water for sale among other commercial uses, but she has since sold the donkey to raise school for the other children.

Martha has now embarked on drilling a shallow borehole with her children to get water that can be used for farming, among other uses.

"We were advised that at 50 ft, we would get water and that's what we are working towards together with my children and are now at 27 ft," she said.

Martha has been digging the well with the help of her children and thinks the well would be a game changer economically.

She pleaded with the local leaders and well-wishers to help her take her daughter to school.

Waita Ward Development Committee chairperson Caxton Mutambuki said it would be a blow to the community if the girl's education were to be cut short by poverty.
