Azimio leader Raila Odinga has revealed behind-the-scenes intrigues of how President William Ruto was prepared to become the leader of the official opposition.

According to the former Prime Minister, Ruto knew he was not going to win the August 9 2022 presidential election.

He disclosed in an interview with KTN News that because of this, Ruto had a meeting with several senior diplomats in the country, where he told them that he was ready to lead the opposition.

Raila said Ruto then requested that the diplomats compel Raila to create the opposition office within Parliament, should he have won the election.

"I'll give you a background to that memo. Because he knew they were not going to go into government, and this is from several senior diplomats in the country. They talked to him in July," he said.

"They asked what he would do if he lost elections. He said that he wants to be a strong opposition leader and he wants them to help him pressurize me to create the position of official opposition leader in Parliament."

The ODM leader was explaining the genesis of President William Ruto's proposal to Parliament asking for them to amend the constitution and create the office.

He said after Ruto won, the diplomats went to him and asked that he creates the office of the official opposition leader.

"When elections happened they approached him to say that what he wanted created, they now want him to create it. That is the origin of this position. This I've gotten from several diplomats," he said.

Raila refuted claims that the creation of the opposition office is Ruto's way of extending a handshake to.
