Former EACC chairperson Patrick Lumumba has said that the planned Azimio mega protest next week Monday may result in treason if there will be an attempt to overthrow the government.
Speaking on Citizen on Wednesday, Lumumba noted that if what was witnessed in Kisumu will transpire on Monday, then it will interfere with Azimio's constitutional right to hold peaceful demonstrations.
"If that is going to happen on March 20, I dare say without mincing words that the opposition led by Raila Odinga is actually saying that they are going to overthrow the government of Kenya and that is treason," he said.
Lumumba noted that instead of calling for mass protests the opposition chief should use the existing institutions to hold the current regime accountable.
"Thus far I have not seen a petition made by a member of Azimio or governors of Azimio saying that there is a crisis in the country," he said.
"It cannot be right that we use the constitution to intimidate Kenyans. It is improper, selfish, undesirable, and wrong and it must be condemned without fear."
On Monday, Raila will face one of his biggest political tests as he joins his supporters for a grand march to the State House.
Raila on February 22, 2023, gave President William Ruto's administration a 14-day ultimatum to address the high cost of living, alleged electoral injustice and skewed sharing of state jobs, of which the deadline was March 8, 2023.
Raila has led the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition in 20 rallies.
Despite the rallies, Ruto said he remains unshaken by the opposition's antics.
