The late Grace Onyango who was the first woman member of parliament in post-independence Kenya will be laid to rest at her rural home in Sidenda village in Gem constituency, Siaya County on the 31st of March, 2023.
This is according to the funeral steering committee.
The committee chaired by Kisumu county's Kenya National Chambers of Commerce Chairman Israel Agina noted that the body of the fallen political icon will leave the Aghakan hospital morgue in Kisumu on the 29th of March 2023.
Thereafter a requiem mass will be conducted at St. Peters Cathedral on the same day.
Later, Agina noted that celebrations and viewing of the body will be done at the Jaramagi Oginga Odinga Sports Ground.
However, a night vigil will be conducted at her Kisumu residence within Tom Mboya Estate.
Agona further stated that on March 30, the body of Mama Grace will leave Kisumu for the Gem constituency.
Mama Grace passed on aged 99.
She died at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital on Wednesday. She had been ailing.
She was Kenya's first woman mayor, elected in Kisumu in 1965.
Grace was the first woman to be elected MP, for Kisumu Town in 1969 and served until 1983.
She was also the first woman secretary general of the Luo Union (East Africa) and the first woman councillor of Kaloleni ward in Kisumu.
The teacher-turned-politician was also the first woman assistant commissioner of the Girl Guides Association and chairperson of the Child Welfare Society, Kisumu district.
