Frank Lampard has made a shock return as Chelsea's caretaker manager until end of the season following the dismissal of Graham Potter.

In a statement on Thursday,  Chelsea said the move marks a return to Stamford Bridge for Frank who enjoyed an illustrious playing career with the Blues.

During his time, he won the Premier League on three occasions and the UEFA Champions League in Munich.

He managed the club for 84 games, including guiding the team to an FA Cup final.

Co-controlling owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali said they are delighted to welcome Lampard.

"Frank is a Premier League Hall of Fame and a legend at this club. As we continue our thorough and exhaustive process for a permanent head coach."

"We want to provide the club and our fans with a clear and stable plan for the remainder of the season. We want to give ourselves every chance of success and Frank has all of the characteristics and qualities we need to drive us to the finish line."

The duo said they have an important game against Wolves on Saturday.

"We are all going to give Frank our full backing as we aim to get the best possible outcome from all our remaining games."

Frank Lampard has been out of a job since January when he was dismissed by Everton after less than a year in charge.

The ex-Chelsea and England midfielder previously managed the Blues from July 2019 until January 2021, when he was replaced by Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea are 11th in the Premier League and drew 0-0 with Liverpool on Tuesday under Bruno Saltor - with 44-year-old Lampard in attendance at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are 14 points outside the top four, despite having spent more than £550m on new players this season.
