The Kenya Kwanza coalition has vowed to resist any form of blackmail by the opposition as bipartisan talks are set to begin.
Speaking at State House on Tuesday, National Assembly Majority Leader Ichungwa Kimani said that the government will not give in to pressure to implement failed policies of the last regime.
"As a PG we resist any attempts to force or blackmail the government to implement the failed policies of the last regime that drove the country into an economic mess, including corruption-ridden consumption subsidies, irresponsible borrowing and gross fiscal mismanagement, through state capture," he said.
Ichungwa emphasised that the legislators support the government’s policy of subsidising production rather than consumption and prudent fiscal management within a framework of managed debt levels.
He was speaking on Tuesday after attending Kenya Kwanza's fifth PG at State House which was chaired by President William Ruto.
Reading through the resolution, Ichungwa said the legislators agreed with the President on the need to govern the country in accordance with the Constitution and the rule of law.
"The PG re-affirms our commitment to the rule of law and constitutionalism and appreciates the role of the opposition to oversight and criticize the government," he said.
Members of the Kenya Kwanza coalition also affirmed their support for the efforts by the government on policies that are geared towards stabilising the economy.
The efforts are also geared towards lowering the cost of living, creating jobs and incomes for the majority of our people and ensuring inclusive growth.
"This is because that is the contract the Kenya Kwanza alliance signed with the people of Kenya," Ichungwa added.
Appreciating that the constitution of Kenya gives parliament the singular mandate of resolving issues that are of concern to the people of Kenya, the PG resolved with President Ruto on a Parliamentary bipartisan approach in resolving such matters.
Also in reaffirming its commitment to the dictates of the constitution and rule of law, the Kenya Kwanza coalition directed the team nominated for the bipartisan process to strictly adhere to the constitution and established laws in addressing the re-constitution of the IEBC panel.
Kenya Kwanza announced a seven-member team comprised of four MPs and three Senators.
They include Boni Khalwale (Kakamega Senator), George Murugara (MP Tharaka), Esther Okenyuri (Nominated Senator), Mwangi Mutuse (MP Kibwezi West), Lydia Haika (Women Rep Taita Taveta), Hillary Sigei (Senator Bomet) and Adan Keynan MP Eldas.
In addition, the Kenya Kwanza coalition reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law and constitutionalism.
"The Kenya Kwanza team appreciates the role of the opposition to oversight and criticise the government," Ichungwa added.
The Ruto- led coalition also called upon its colleagues in the Opposition to adhere to the rule of law and constitutionalism and pursue all issues of concern through established institutions under the constitution.
