The Kenya Red Cross Society Board Secretary-General Asha Mohammed has stepped down.
She has handed over her role to Deputy Secretary General Ahmed Idris.
In a statement on Friday, Kenya Red Cross Society chairman Geoffrey Korir said Asha stepped down from her role for personal reasons effective April 14.
"Asha will in the next few months support the leadership transition as she hands over an acting capacity to Deputy Secretary General Idris. The Board is confident that Dr Asha will be able to oversee an effective transition process with the support of the Board, Staff, Volunteers and Partners of the Kenya Red Cross," he said.
Asha has been the Red Cross Society SG since January 2020.
Prior to being the SG, Asha held the positions of Deputy Secretary General and Director for Health and Social Services at the Kenya Red Cross.
Korir said her role as SG coincided with a very difficult global and local humanitarian context, from responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, to drought.
Korir said under her leadership the society has lived up to its commitment to responding to emergencies and supporting communities.
"The Board is grateful for her service, passion and commitment," he said.
"Asha has been an inspiration to the community of Staff, Volunteers, Partners and Members of the Kenya Red Cross Society, who look forward to her support in the future as a community leader and life member of the Kenya Red Cross."
