Azimio La Umoja leader Raila Odinga has said the town hall meeting set to be held in Murang’a town on Thursday will be peaceful.

In a press release, Raila has said the meeting is in line with the coalition’s ongoing engagement with the public on the challenges facing the country.

He cited the high cost of commodities, search for electoral justice, reform and reconstitution of the IEBC and protection of the multi-party democracy.

“Like all engagements that the party has held in recent months, the Murang’a meeting will be peaceful and strictly within the law. I personally look forward to this engagement”.

Raila invited residents to turn up in large numbers and freely engage on the issues affecting them, saying similar engagements will be held in other parts of the country over the next couple of weeks.

This comes few hours after county police commander David Mathiu said he had cancelled the meeting as he was notified too late and that police officers would be deployed elsewhere.

But former Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria, who will be hosting Raila, insisted that the meeting would go on and asked the police not to interfere with it.

Wa Iria who is also Usawa Kwa Wote party leader presented the notice to the police on Tuesday morning.

He said the meeting was a citizens’ engagement and that police officers did not have to be there but added that they have a constitutional right to assemble.
