President William Ruto has revealed that his government will build eight big dams in Meru county at a cost of Sh30 billion.
The dams are part of the Kenya Kwanza government's agenda to enhance food security through irrigation in strategic food baskets across the country.
The President, who spoke on Saturday in Meru said the national government, will make strategic interventions to boost agriculture and enhance food security.
''The eight dam will cost 30 billion and is in the Private Partnership Programme so that in the next five years we sort out food insecurity,'' the President said.
Ruto said the government is committed to addressing the high cost of unga in the country through long-term measures like constructing dams.
He said the price of Unga will fall below sh140 in the coming days falling the government's deliberate interventions.
''From next week you will see the price of Unga prices coming down,'' he said.
However, there have been concern that most millers are yet to lower the price Unga with only two millers said to have lowered the prices below Sh170.
