State to unveil new funding model for Tvets, unversities - Ruto

Ruto said the quality of education ought not be compromised due to challenges caused by funding.

President William Ruto has announced that his administration will from May unveil a new funding model for universities and Technical and Vocational Training Institutions.

The President said the next cohort of learners who will be selected to join Tvets and universities will benefit from enhanced funds from May.

Ruto said the government will next week announced the enhanced resources for institutions of higher learning that will see their allocations doubled.

Ruto, speaking on Saturday in Meru county, said there will be a new funding mechanism for higher institutions of learning. 

He said the government has reviewed the funding that goes to universities and found that the money the institutions get is too low. 

"The money that goes to technical training colleges and universities is currently low. We are going to double the resources that are going to our TVETS and universities so that we can eliminate the challenges in our institutions of higher learning," Ruto said.

The Head of State said he will speak on it officially in the coming week.

" We will now have a new mechanism on financing higher education education, from our colleges and TVETS to universities. We have had many problems when it comes to funding colleges and universities," he said. 

Ruto said those who will be joining TVETS and universities from May will find a new and comprehensive  funding mechanism. 

He said the quality of education ought not be compromised due to challenges caused by funding.

Ruto said there are plans to hire 1300 more TVET teachers and that he wants TVET teachers to be paid by the governments. 

"  In the next one or two months you will have new tutors and in our next budget from June, we will employ 2000 more TVET teachers," he said.
