Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung'aro has on Friday arrived at Shakahola forest as the exhumation of bodies continued.

This will be his first time visiting the site since the beginning of the exhumation process.

However, sources reveal that the process has been temporarily halted due to the heavy rains in the area.

On Wednesday, Mung'aro revealed that the 800-acre piece of land where decomposing bodies are being recovered does not belong to the controversial pastor Paul Mackenzie.

He said that the land was part of the third phase of the Chakama Settlement Scheme which he claims had been grabbed by several shady individuals.

"That land which Mackenzie is occupying is not his; we have three schemes in that area which were initially grabbed by some individuals from the Chakama ranchers," Mung'aro said.

"When I was Malindi MP, we managed to recover Phase 1 which is about 52,000 acres. We recovered Phase 2 around five years ago. The area he (Mackenzie) is occupying is Chakama 3 which is currently being contested for by the people who grabbed it and the bank."

He said he should not be blamed for the killings in the Shakahola area since security agents are responsible for detecting criminals and any cults operating under the name of churches.

"Security issues are not under the county but rather security apparatuses. Only they can help us unravel such cases. We didn't know that all this was going on,” Mung'aro said.

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki said the government has intensified search efforts for people believed to be hiding in Shakahola.
