Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga now says that the planned Tuesday protests will go on despite an assassination plot against him.

According to the opposition leader, the assassination plot is being orchestrated by senior officials of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Raila insisted that they will not be cowed.

"The warnings have included repeated threats of assassination of Azimio leaders from Mr. Rigathi Gachagua and Mr Moses Kuria. The latest grim warning has come from Hon. William Ruto, who yesterday vowed to stop the planned demonstrations at all costs and declared them "nonsense".

"If the regime choses to turn our peaceful and constitutional activities into a showdown and assassination that Mr. Kuria and Mr. Gachagua are threatening, so be it, we are ready," he said in a letter seen by the Star.

The Azimio protests are scheduled to take place on May 2.

The Azimio leader was responding to a statement by the police banning the protests.

Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei, in a letter, said while the Constitution allows every citizen to peaceably and unarmed, to assemble, to demonstrate, to picket, and to present petitions to public authorities, that right is not absolute.

He said the last protests were marred with violence with demonstrators turning up while armed hence the decision to ban it.

"Previous demonstrations were marred with violence as the demonstrators were armed with machetes, who attacked innocent members of the public who were going about their business resulting in the destruction of property, attacks on members of the general public," Bungei said in a press conference Sunday.

On Saturday, President William Ruto swore that he will use his powers to stop their planned protests.

Ruto said he was ready to use his power and full force to ensure the life and property of all Kenyans is protected.

"I am the commander in chief, nyinyi mtajua hamjui...hakuna mali ya wananchi itaharibika tena, hakuna biashara ya mkenya itaharibika tena," Ruto retorted.

The President who spoke in Kakamega on Saturday said he has been lenient to the Opposition leaders by giving in to their demands but they have gone ahead to despise him.

"Hawa watu wawache mchezo, si tulimaliza uchaguzi? Si hawa watu ni madharau wanajaribu kunionyesha," he posed.

He added, "Walikuwa na serikali ya handshake, sisi tuliwafanyia maandamano, si waliendelea na maneno yao mpaka ikakwama? Kama wako na maneno wangojee 2027 tukutane kwa debe," he said.
