The student organisation at the Kenyatta University now wants the referral hospital placed under institution's management.
In a statement on Monday, the Kenyatta University Student Association (KUSA) gave the government a two-week ultimatum to institute the change of guard at Kenyatta University Teaching Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH).
"We humbly request the Kenya government, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Paul Wainaina and the KU management board to facilitate the surrender and return of the KUTRRH to KU unconditionally within two weeks," the student leaders said.
"Failure to which unspecified actions shall be exacted," they added.
The student body said that the university has over 70,000 students who have parents and guardians backed up by a proud and active alumni association.
KUSA said over 2,000 medical students have had to travel to Kiambu Sub-County Level Five hospital for classes.
This was after the learners and their lecturers were denied access to KUTRRH as it was outsourced to an international society.
"Even though the facility is fully functional and retains the name Kenyatta University, no KU student or lecturer has ever been granted access into its perimeter fence to learn," the student body said.
"We are advised that the teaching section of the hospital that includes lecture halls, skills labs, a library and the teaching administration offices have been outsourced to an international organisation at our expense."
The student body lamented that the UoN has Kenyatta National Hospital, Moi University has Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The student leaders wondered why KU was being denied access to KUTRRH.
"Why can't Kenyatta University have KUTRRH or is there more to it than meets the eye? Are the same land cartels that salivate at KU land still in operation?" they posed.
