Guard murdered as thugs vandalize transformer in Machakos

Police are investigating an incident where a night guard was murdered while on duty at a school in Matungulu, Machakos County.

Maurice Mutiso Mutua, 53, a watchman at Kyamulendu primary school in Matungulu sub-county was killed by unknown assailants in the wee hours of Friday morning.

His body was found lying in the school’s compound on Friday morning.

The deceased was lying facing downwards with his hands tied on the back when his body was discovered. Both his legs were also tied.

Matungulu sub-county police commander Peter Omondi said the deceased was on May 5, 2023, at an unknown time murdered by thugs who then vandalized the school’s transformer.

“He was hit on the forehead with a blunt object,” Omondi told the Star on the phone on Friday.

The police boss said the scene was visited by the sub-county’s security team who processed it before the body was removed to Kangundo Level 4 hospital mortuary awaiting an autopsy.

Parts of the vandalized transformer belonging to Kenya Power were recovered from the scene within the school compound.

The deceased’s colleague who only identified herself as Florence said she last so him on Thursday at 6.30 pm when he relieved her from duty.

Florence said she guards the school during day time while the deceased works at night. The public primary school she said was manned by only two of them.

“The deceased yesterday reported to work at 6.00pm, we parted ways at 6.30pm only to learn of his murder incident this morning,” Florence told reporters.

Florence said she had agreed with the deceased that she would relieve him of duty at 6.00 am on Friday.

Teachers who spoke to reporters said they were saddened by the guard’s murder. They described him as a ‘friend’ to the school.

“We are saddened because this isn’t pleasing, it’s so sad especially to teachers because the deceased was a friend to the school. He was hard-working,” a teacher who declined to be mentioned said.

She said the deceased related well to the entire school’s community.

“We wish that those concerned may do something about security in this area. We have had many challenges with our property as a school,” she added.

No arrests had been made in connection to the incident by press time.
