A police officer suspected of killing a boda boda operator group's chairman has been arraigned in a Chuka court.

Corporal George Murithi, based at Chuka police station, appeared before resident magistrate Oscar Kinyua, over the shooting to the death of Tharaka Nithi County Boda Boda Operators chairman Willis Mugambi.

The court granted police three days to conclude their investigations.

The court also ordered a mental assessment to determine if the accused is fit to stand trial on May 16, at the High Court in Chuka.

Mugambi was killed in Chuka town on April 18, during protests by Nkwego village residents who were demonstrating against an alleged delay by police to apprehend the killers of a local, Daniel Mutembei, on March 18, 2023.

Five people suspected of having been involved in Mutembei's death were arrested and charged at the High Court in Chuka on April 14. They denied the murder charges.

Mugambi was shot dead as police dispersed the demonstrators who had barricaded the Meru-Nairobi highway, bringing activities in the town and along the road to a standstill.
