Joseph Irungu, alias Jowie, at a Milimani court on Tuesday, June 25, 2019.

Jowie Irungu, the main suspect in the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani on Thursday told the court he did not know his alleged victim.

Jowie made this statement even as the prosecution said some witnesses had said he was with him and Monica on the night she was killed.

Lee Owen the seventh prosecution witness in the case testified in court stating that Jowie was with Monica at her house in Lamuria Gardens on the night of September 19th.

Owen identified Jowie in court as the person he met that day.

The prosecution further pointed out the testimony of a guard from Lamuria Gardens who was able to identify Jowie in court.

But Jowie still denied knowing Monica.

The prosecution then went ahead to produce three video clips all obtained from Jowies iPhone.

One of the clips had Monica, and his brother George in it having drinks in the company of others.

But Jowie still maintained Monica was a stranger to him pushing a narrative that the video could have been sent by a third party.

It was his testimony that he only knew the brother George Kimani whom they schooled together at Kenya Polytechnic.

Jowie insisted that he did not know Monica, never visited her house yet from the prosecution's case, Monica's DNA profile was generated from a brown short collected at Jowies house in Langata.

The khaki short has a blood stain said to be Monica's. But Jowie has since denied owning the short saying his was brown in colour similar to his shoes.

Irungu and Maribe are jointly charged with the murder of Monica whose body was found in a bathtub in her house at Lamuria Gardens in Kilimani, Nairobi county on September 19, 2018.

They have both denied the charges. The court found they have a case to answer after the prosecution closed its case. Yesterday they took to the stand to defend themselves.

Jowie in his further defence told the trial court that a number of witnesses produced by the prosecution were lying.

He said one Jennings, Owen, and Monica's brother identified as George played a major role in depicting him as the villain.

It was Jennings testimony that Jowie changed into a kanzu on the fateful day. But Jowie told the court he only wore a kanzu back in 2015 while he was on official duty in UAE.

Yesterday's proceedings revealed how Jowie was also called by a number belonging to Monica at 3 am on September 19, 2018.

The person who called Jowie with Monica's line was the brother George. Jowie said George was informing him of the sister's death.

It was not the first time that number was in communication with that of Jowie. The court heard that the line called Jowie's number on September 1, was George's asking him if they could hang out.

When George testified in court, he said he had reached out to Jowie to help him with media coverage over the sister's death.

George told the then-trial Judge James Wakiaga that after he found his sister brutally murdered and the police had taken over the scene, he texted Jowie.

He said he thought Jowie could assist with media coverage because his fiancé (Jacque Maribe) worked at Citizen TV.

“After the police came, we needed to talk to the media, so I texted Joe and told him what had happened. He called and asked whether we knew who did it..I told him we did not know, and he said the case won't go far if the media is involved,” George told the court.

The court heard that Jowie went ahead and informed Kimani that he had a security company and could assist the family to know who murdered Monica.

“I never followed up on his offer, my dad and my uncle went to Citizen TV and they came back with the media,” he told the court.

According to Kimani, Jowie never told him he was with Monica the night she was murdered, he only intimated he had talked to her on the phone.

He further explained that his sister had in early 2018 mentioned to him that she was communicating with Jowie on Instagram.
