The government has announced that it is in the process of fast tracking titling programmes in Tana River County.

A two-tiered committee with members from the National and County government has been formed to execute the task.

The resolution was made on Thursday following a meeting held between Lands and Physical Planning Principal Secretary Nixon Korir and leaders from Tana River.

It was resolved that Korir will chair the committee at the national level of a team comprising of Directors of relevant departments, the Governor and legislators.

County Commissioner will lead a team at the county level which will include community representatives, the County Assembly and representatives of group ranches which will map out areas in the county that have no disputes and have received the green light for titling.

PS Korir urged the leaders to take the initiative to resolve any disputes that hamper the issuing of title deeds.

He challenged them to put efforts to solve land issues which are a major problem in the county.

"We should not be talking the same issue five years to come because the squatters will have doubled by then," Korir added.

The meeting was a follow-up to a visit of Tana River by Lands Cabinet Secretary Zachariah Njeru, the National Land Commission and the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Lands last month.

Residents and leaders of Tana River County called on the national government to issue them with title deeds as security for their land.

They claimed that lack of the documents was hindering development activities in the vast county which depends on pastoralism and farming.

On his part, Tan River Senator Danson Mungatana said they have resolved to lead from the front and ensure that residents are issued with title deeds.

"We want to make sure that as many titles are issued to the residents of Tana River in the shortest time possible," he said

According to Garsen MP Ali Wario, majority of the land in the county is free of disputes and the titling process should be started as soon as possible.

"In my constituency, almost 90 per cent of the land has no disputes and I see no reason to slow down the process once we begin," he said.

Other leaders who attended the meeting included Bura MP Yakub Adow, Galole MP Said Hiribae, Women Rep Amina Dika and former Governor Hussein Dado as well as several officials from the Tana River County Government.
