Kapsabet Boys High School will give a scholarship to the winner of its annual Form 4 mathematics contest to study in Australia.
The 20th edition of the Annual Mathematics Contest is to take place on Saturday at the school ground. It's open to other schools sending participants from Forms 1 to 4.
Its main objective is to create an avenue for learners to showcase their skills and increase their confidence in maths.
The scholarship is made possible by Grace International Migration.
Kapsabet's maths department head Oliver Toroitich said the contest will also provide a forum for interactions and exchange of ideas.
He said each school is requested to present a team of 10 participants in each class -forms 1, 2, 3, and 4.
The school may register as many teams as possible. The registration fee is Sh2,500 per team. The results and awards will be presented on the same day.
Toroitich said a second student will receive a scholarship to study a diploma course of their choice at Strathmore University, courtesy of Strathmore.
Other awards include a whole year’s school fees for the top student in every class from day school category and trophies to best boys school, best girls school, best mixed boarding school and best school overall.
Individual prizes will be given to the top students in each category of schools, including boys schools, girls schools, mixed boarding schools and day schools.
Kapsabet maths teacher Kipchumba Korir said the objective of the contest is to build interest in mathematics and change the attitude that only a certain calibre of students can excel in the subject.
Last year, KCSE exam candidate Johnson Musungu from the same school was declared the winner of the secondary school’s mathematics competition in which 172 high schools participated. The contest attracted 3,000 competitors.
