Kenya and Somalia have resolved to open the border in phases, within the next 90 days.
Making the announcement on Monday, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki said that the Mandera/Belet Hawo (Belethawa) will be the first to be opened in the next 30 days.
This particular border point provides entry from the Kenyan side at Mandera County.
"In the second phase which is 60 days from now, we should be able to open the second border in Liboi-Harhar/Dhobley. This will provide entry from Gariisa county," he said.
The third border point to be opened will be Kiunga/Ras Kamboni in Lamu.
CS Kindiki affirmed that the government of Kenya will continue to engage with the Federal Government of Somalia to develop and implement joint approaches and strategies cutting across social economic and insecurity issues.
His counterpart from Somalia, Mohamed Ahmed Sheikh Ali said the Federal Government is committed to promoting and strengthening corporation with its neighbors to improve security.
The two also resolved to strengthen cross-border communication and information-sharing exchange between the two countries.
“We will also develop modalities of addressing cross-border challenges appreciating the nature of transnational threats that require a coordinated and comprehensive response by the two countries,” Kindiki stated.
The previous administration’s term ended before talks on the reopening were concluded.
They were closed in 2011 at the height of al Shabaab attacks.
