Preacher Joseph Chenge of Jerusalem Mowar Church and his accomplices who wanted to meet President William Ruto turns to prayers in cell.

Self-proclaimed prophet Joseph Chenge of Jerusalem Mowar Church converted his cell into a prayer room on Thursday.

Chenge wanted to meet President William Ruto and urged him to make haste and come see him within 21 days or risk facing certain misfortunes.

In a video seen by the Star, Chenge is seen kneeling down while speaking in tongues.

He was joined by other men who knelt down and were also speaking in tongues.

The preacher and his followers were dressed in white clothes and had white capes on their heads.

They included six self-proclaimed pastors and five people who were staying in the church for worship.

The suspects are being detained at Mbita police station.

He was arrested on Wednesday, with 11 accomplices at their house of worship in Ruri village, Suba North constituency.

Homa Bay Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer Abed Kavoo said they are holding Chenge for promoting controversial religious teachings.

Kavoo said their preliminary investigations revealed that the cleric was detaining sick people ‘to pray for them’ instead of allowing them to seek medication.

"Sick people with different diseases are detained at his church in disguise of praying for them. Some have been at the church for more than three months,” Kavoo said.

They were arrested after a video clip linked to Chenge went viral on social media where he asked Ruto to meet him urgently.

He argued that God had foretold him something about Kenya so he needed to personally meet the President to give him the revelation.

“Get time we sit together so I can explain to you the prophecy from God. We’ll pray together thereafter so as to get intervention,” Chenge said.

Many of his followers trust that Chenge has prayer powers that can heal the sick and cure various diseases.
