Authorities in Eldoret have closed a hotel for defying hygiene measures.
In a video aired by Citizen TV on Tuesday, a gaping sewer hole is seen in the kitchen.
Speaking, a trader said the kitchen area also housed the 'toilet'.
"Jikoni yenye wanatumia iko chafu na kuna septic tank hapo imepasuka na hapo ndio choo na wanatengeneza chakula," she said.
This is loosely translated to, "The kitchen is dirty and there's an open septic tank and they use it as the latrine and make food there."
The shop owner neighbouring the hotel said he had to deal with a urine smell which was seeping into his shop, damaging his goods.
He said it was unfair that the adjacent businesses had to comply with health measures and pay for their licenses, yet they had to survive the hotel's menace.
"We are paying our licences, the Kenya Revenue Authorities and everything and yet we are suffering," he said.
Another business owner complained that the smell was scaring away their customers.
Authorities have issued notices over hygiene adding that actions will be taken against those found to be violating.
