Women Members of Parliament prepare to address the media in Parliament on May 23, 2023

Women Members of Parliament have come out to condemn demeaning remarks against nominated MP Sabina Chege.

This was after Bunge la Wananchi President Calvin Okoth alias Gaucho uttered some degrading words during Jubilee National Delegates Conference on Monday.

Led by National Assembly Deputy Speaker Gladys Shollei the women leaders vowed to stand with Chege.

"As women parliamentarians, we stand firm with Sabina Chege and have offered her our fullest support. On behalf of the Kenyan women we condemn the abuse directed at Sabina Chege," she said.

"We have fought long and hard to overcome the stereotypes and backward ideologies that make it difficult for women to participate in leadership."

Shollei faulted leaders who were in attendance and did not call out Gaucho.

"Yesterday, however, we discovered to our utter shock that national leaders whom Kenyan women have looked up to for solidarity are not only comfortable with abuse against women but they also publicly tolerate, encourage and facilitate the vice," she said.

Karua, on Monday, told off Gaucho over his remarks saying he should not criticise leaders based on their physical appearance.

"Please stop issuing any criticism or insults that are gender-based because you will insult even those who are here without knowing," she said.

"We are people who follow the law, there is a young man who demeaned a leader and I will correct him. Even if someone has wronged us, either a father or a mother we should not criticise them based on their physical appearance but rather on their work."

Karua further urged leaders to be keen and respectful when addressing each other.
