The National Transport and Safety Authority has broken its silence regarding a viral video where a female passenger was thrown out of a matatu for allegedly refusing to pay fare.

In a statement on Saturday, NTSA requested the public for the vehicle's registration number. The route the matatu plies was not immediately established.

"Good morning. Kindly share with us the registration number of the vehicle," the authority said in a tweet.

In the undated video, the lady is seen being dragged out of the matatu by a female conductor. All the while, she's heard insisting that she had already paid her fare.

"Nimelipa wachana na mimi. Wachana na mimi (I have paid, leave me alone. Leave me alone)," she said.

Her pleas, however, fell on deaf ears as the conductor continued to drag her out of the matatu. Her shoes had come off following the scuffle.

"Mpee hizo vitu. Lazima alipe hii gari (Give her her things. She must pay for transport)," the conductor said after pulling the passenger out.

All the while, a traffic police officer is seen in the video standing by the vehicle's door the drama unfolded.

The incident has evoked anger amongst Kenyans who have called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to look into the matter and summon the officer.

The incident came days after a deaf woman was stripped naked by touts of a matatu over bus fare. It is said she could not express herself well over the fare issue.

The matatu is said to ply the Nairobi-Meru route.
