Ruto commends Google for impacting Kenya's digital growth

President William Ruto has acknowledged Google's impact in Kenya's digital and ICT infrastructural development.

He said through Grow with Google, individuals are exposed to free training resources which enable them to acquire digital skills.

Ruto said through Hustle Academy and the week-long boot camp for small and medium-sized businesses, the individuals acquire skills that are necessary to enable them succeed in the digital economy.

In 2022, more than 1000 individuals graduated while 1,500 more are currently undergoing training under the initiative.

Ruto spoke on Tuesday at State House, Nairobi during the closing ceremony of YouTube Black Voices.

He said the government has provided 1,000 scholarships through the ICT Authority to provide digital training mainly for the youth.

The training focuses on digital marketing, e-commerce, data analytics, IT support, project management, user experience design and cyber security.

The government's partnership with Google begun in 2018 when then second lady Rachel Ruto gave over Sh12 million to support the training of local creatives under the Creatives Garage in her capacity as patron of the Google Impact Challenge, Google.org.

"I look back on the journey we have traveled with Google with tremendous pride and satisfaction, grateful for the immense opportunities our partnership has unlocked for many creative Kenyans," Ruto said.

The President said they were working to strengthening the partnership  to help fast track the Digital Superhighway and Creative Economy pillar.
