Azimio Spokesperson Makau Mutua has come out to defend Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba for defying President William Ruto after she opposed the proposed Finance Bill, 2023 in Parliament.

Wamuchomba sided with the opposition and voted against the Bill.

According to Mutua, no one should attack her for exercising her democratic rights.

He insisted that democracies thrive because of the few people who defy their masters.

"No one should vilify MP Gathoni Wamuchomba for her position on the Finance Bill. Those attacking her don’t understand the genius of the democratic project, and why it’s the worst form of government except for all others, as Winston Churchill wisely opined... Let her be," Mutua said.

On Wednesday, MPs voted in favour of the Finance Bill 2023, paving the way for its determination by the committee of the whole House.

It followed an intense debate in Parliament to discuss the proposed tax measures which 176 MPs voted to endorse at the second reading stage while 81 MPs out of 257 opposed.

The Bill moved to the committee of the whole House where members will have a chance to push through their amendments.

The Committee will consider the Bill clause by clause and take a vote on each of the clauses.

The National Assembly's Finance and National Planning Committee tabled the amended Finance Bill, 2023 on Tuesday after the public gave its views on the document.

There was an uproar over certain proposals in the Bill that Kenyans termed punitive.
