Seven people including two minors perished in three different accidents in Naivasha on Sunday evening.

The seven had attended the just concluded World Rally Championship in Hells Gate National Park and were on their way home when the accidents occurred.

Hundreds of rally lovers spent hours along Moi South Lake road following a five-hour jam caused by heavy traffic and overlapping motorists.

In the first incident, a lorry ferrying cement rammed head-on into a car ferrying three men and two minors near Fai’s Den along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road.

A witness, Naftali Juma, said that the trailer heading to Naivasha from Mai Mahiu was overtaking a fleet of cars when it rammed into the car that was carrying rally fans.

Juma said that the driver of the trailer was to blame for the Sunday evening accident that caused major traffic snarl-up along the busy road.

“The three men died on the spot while the two minors who were seriously injured succumbed to their injuries at Naivasha subcounty hospital,” he said,

And in the second incident, a teenager was pronounced dead at the hospital after falling from a matatu hours after attending the rally.

A group of youths were hanging dangerously from the fast moving matatu along Moi South Lake road when the victim slipped and crushed his head on the tarmac.

“He fell unconscious after falling on his head and he was rushed to hospital where, unfortunately, he didn’t make it,” a witness said.

And in the third incident, a motorcycle operator was hit and killed by a speeding motorist along the same road as those who had attended the rally drove home.

During the incident at Karagita trading centre, the driver of the speeding car fled from the scene as members of the public tried in vain to give chase.

Naivasha OCPD Benjamin Boen confirmed the cases, adding that all the bodies had been collected and taken to the sub-county hospital.

“In the first case, this was purely negligence and the driver shall be charged in court facing various charges while our officers are seeking the driver of the car that hit and killed a motorcycle operator,” he said.
