Gachagua gifts Special Olympic team Sh3m for win in Berlin

He praised the team for doing Kenya proud by scooping 25 medals at the games.

Deputy President Rigathi on Wednesday gifted Sh3 million to Kenya's Special Olympic team.

The DP handed the money to Pastor Dorcas in a black bag to hand over to the heroes for their commendable performance in during the games in Berlin, Germany.

"It is a holiday so I will give you Sh3 million in cash and divide it among yourselves. Yangu ni ile special injection ya haraka haraka," he said.

Team Kenya scooped 15 Gold medals, four Silver medals and six Bronze medals during the games that took place in Berlin Germany from June 17 to 25, 2023.

The DP said the government will give Sh750,000 to every team member who won a gold medal.

He added that each team that won a silver medal at the games will get Sh100,000.

"The individual medalists who won bronze will get Sh500,000 and the team that won silver will get Sh75,000 and the individuals who won bronze will get Sh300,000 and the team that won bronze will get Sh50,000. In total the government will give you Sh10.2 million," he said. 

The Deputy President said the government is in discussion with the Ministry of Sports regarding how to help the team in future.

The DP spoke when he hosted the Special Olympic team at his home for a luncheon.

He praised the team for the victory saying they have done the country proud.

He said by winning in the global arena, Kenya gets respected across the world and tourism is boosted.

He urged the media to brand them by talking about their story to create awareness that disability is not inability.
