Presiding Judge of the Environment and Lands Court Justice Oscar Angote has urged Chief Justice Martha Koome to look into hiring more Judges to help in service delivery in understaffed areas.

Angote said judges in Mombasa, Thika, Kajiado and Nakuru are handling more than 500 matters per judge.

On the flipside, Angote said the division has had a stellar performance having recorded a 153 per cent score in case clearance rate in the last two years.

Angote spoke during the launch of the performance evaluation report presided over by the Chief Justice.

Also present were DCJ Philomena Mwilu and other principal judges of various divisions.

"Two of the Environment and Lands divisions have been set up and they will start operations tomorrow," he said.

The establishment of these divisions will improve the efficiency of the courts. It is also a score for climate change issues and biodiversity laws.

"Guidelines have already been prepared to guide litigants on the scope of what land and environment matter is," Angote said.

At the same time, Deputy Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Paul Ndemo appealed to Parliament to consider increasing their budget further as the demands of the Judiciary remain ever-growing.

"Adequate funding will enhance access to justice, and deploy innovative technologies that improve efficiency," he said.
