The government has lined up mega-infrastructural projects in Homa Bay County as part of President William Ruto’s socioeconomic transformation agenda for the Nyanza region.
According to the Internal Security Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, the prime focus is to expedite various water and sanitation projects and reinvigorate the region’s blue economy.
Omollo noted that among the planned projects is the rehabilitation of Mbita, Homa Bay, and Kendu Bay piers at a cost of Sh600 million.
He said this project will revitalize economic activities along the shores of the lake.
Speaking in Mbita High School where he led other alumni in raising Sh 20 million for upgrading and equipping the school’s facilities, the PS also announced plans to acquire a ferry to facilitate and ease transport in Lake Victoria.
The area has recorded a number of accidents, but the ferry will provide safer and more efficient transportation across the bays and contribute to economic growth in the region.
"This vessel that we are going to acquire will revolutionize the movement of people and goods between the islands and the mainland," Omollo noted.
The PS also revealed that the government was also set to complete and deliver a multi-billion network of roads in a bid to open up the region to more investment and improve access to markets for products from the region.
The road from Mbita to Sindo, all the way to Sori, he said will be completed for ease of movement adding that the contractor was already back to the site.
"In a matter of weeks, we will be launching the construction of the Rusinga Ring Road at a cost of Sh1.2 billion. We will also be doing the Mfangano Ring Road amongst many other government projects the government has committed to undertake.”
