KNUT's Second Vice National Chairperson John Wesonga has passed away at a Nairobi hospital after a long illness.

Kenya National Union of Teachers Secretary-General Collins Oyuu made the announcement on Thursday.

"It is with profound shock and dismay that we announce the death of our 2nd Vice National Chairman Brother John Wesonga at Nairobi West Hospital after being diagnosed with Colon Cancer," Oyuu said.

He said Wesonga will be remembered as a great trade unionist who served as the Executive Secretary of KNUT in the larger Butere, Mumias Branch.

Wesonga also served as the provincial secretary of the then-Western Provincial Council before he became an National Executive Council (NEC) member.

He was eventually elected to the current position of the second Vice National Chairman where he served until his demise.

"On behalf of the National Steering, the NEC and the entire teaching fraternity, may I convey our heartfelt condolences at this time," Oyuu said.

"Other arrangements will be conveyed once completed. May the Almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace."

Wesonga was elected as the union’s second vice chairperson in June 2021.

He was elected alongside the first KNUT Vice National Chairperson Stanley Mutai.
