ICT CS Eliud Owalo on Wednesday launched three Jitume Kazi laboratories in Maseno School, Maseno University, and St. Mary’s School in Yala, Siaya.

Owalo has been setting up the jitume digital labs across the country to train youths on digital skills capacity-building programmes.

“ICT was identified both as a goal in its own right and as the single most important enabler and prime mover for the rest of the goals,” Owalo said.

“The Maseno community and St. Mary’s Yala have a very special place in my heart, as places that nurtured me in my youthful years.”

He said through the programmes, one million learners will be equipped with market-ready business and ICT related courses for free.

The CS noted that the government development agenda prioritizes agriculture and food production, affordable housing, growth of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise, universal health coverage, digital superhighway, creative economy and environment and climate change.

President William Ruto said the government will invest in digital economy to create employment for the youth.

He said the sector has the potential of spurring growth in the country.

“The digital economy will drive growth and create jobs, especially for the youth,” he said.

Recently, Ruto announced that at least 5,000 government services have been digitized.

He said the aim is to significantly cut down transaction costs and minimise opportunities for corruption by eliminating unnecessary bureaucracy, and also increase transparency in government.

He added that his administration intends to cover all the remaining services by the end of 2023.
