The initiative, dubbed MombasaCare, aims to provide free healthcare to at least 15,000 needy families.
Speaking when he paid a courtesy visit to Health CS Susan Nakhumicha on Monday, Governor Abdulswamad Nassir insisted on the importance of ensuring vulnerable households have access to quality healthcare services.
"My intention is to implement the roll out of this programme at the earliest possible convenience. We have identified our beneficiaries and now, we look forward to the cooperation of the NHIF to make this a reality for the people of Mombasa," he said.
The plan will form part of the country's overall Universal Health Care agenda.
Present were PS Public Heath and Professional Standards Susan Muthoni, PS Medical Services Harry Kimtai and acting CEO NHIF Samson Kuhora.
The Governor was accompanied by his CECM Health Dr. Swabah Ahmed, CECM Finance Evans Oanda and other officials from the County Government of Mombasa in a move that is seen as unprecedented in actualizing universal healthcare.
