Azimio leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday escalated his bid to 'remove' President William Ruto from power by launching a website for the collection of signatures.
The former Prime Minister on Monday upscaled the target to 15 million signatures up from the 10 million he announced on Friday during the Saba Saba rally at the historic Kamukunji grounds.
On Tuesday during a press conference at the SKM command Centre in Karen, Nairobi, Raila unveiled the Tumechoka digital platform to accelerate the signature collection process.
"This is part of the campaign of resistance, the civil disobedience and citizens’ actions that we have decided to pursue to force Ruto and his regime to respect and listen to the people," Raila said.
He said the digital platform will complement the manual signature collection process which has since seen 1.2 million people sign up since Friday.
He said the sum total effect of the exercise is to take back the powers delegated to Ruto and his administration for imposing punitive, unfair and unjust taxes on the people without their consent.
What's on Tumechoka Citizen Initiative?
For starters, the online petition requires signatories to declare that they have read and understood the course being pushed by promoters of the initiative.
"Having read and understood the intention of the promoters of this initiative, I hereby Support the Citizens’ initiative to remove from office Mr William Ruto as President and Mr Rigathi Gachagua as Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya," the declaration reads.
On the left column of the digital removal form, signatories are supposed to fill in their ID number, first name, phone number (optional), and constituency.
On the right column, signatories are supposed to fill in their last name, upload an image of ID and indicate their county name and ward.
They are then supposed to tick a box confirming that by giving their details, they are signing the petition willingly to support the initiative.
"By submitting my details, I support this initiative and give express consent to receive communication."
After the confirmation, signatories are then supposed to confirm support for the initiative by digitally appending their signature in a box on the left side of the form and then press 'submit'.
Those who wish to sign the form manually can download it and submit the dully filled document to Azimio offices in their respective wards.
"The digital platform we have unveiled today is complementary to all other efforts and platforms including civil disobedience, tax boycotts and defiance that are meant to compel the regime to repeal the Finance Act 2023, and take deliberate steps to lower the cost of living," Raila said during the press conference.
