Scrap metal dealers have been warned against purchasing metals suspected to have been obtained through the destruction and vandalism of government property.
In a statement, the Scrap Metal Council (SMC) said it is concerned about the increasing cases of destruction being reported in various parts of the country.
“The council has noted with concern the recurring and increasing reports of destruction and vandalism of critical public and private infrastructures in the country especially on our roads and highways,” Council’s chairman Francis Mugo said.
The statement comes on a day after demonstrations that rocked various parts of the country.
Protesters were captured vandalising equipment along the highways including the Expressway.
They were seen pulling out metal barriers and road rails along the road.
Mugo said such actions amount to economic sabotage and any dealer found with the said materials will face the full force of the law which includes the revocation of the operating licence.
“In view of the above, the Council is cautioning scrap metal dealers to desist from aiding these misconducts,” he said.
Mugo has instead encouraged the metal dealers’ associations to support the government by reporting any such cases for action.
“We appreciate all the dealers that have been responsive to our call and also urge them to continue sensitising other stakeholders,” he added.
The destruction has seen National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah to react over it.
Ichung'wah said the destruction of property by the protesters must be stopped by all means.
