Kitui East Member of Parliament Nimrod Mbai was on Monday grilled for hours by the anti-graft agency over his behavior in public.
He denied assaulting a Kenya Power and Lighting officer.“No I never assaulted anyone. Did you see me? I am a pastor and did not do that,” he said.
He had been summoned to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission following the incident.
And after spending almost four hours, he walked out and said it was not him who committed the offense.
Mbai, who claims to be a pastor, stated that he had no knowledge of the incident in question and claimed that the video footage had been tampered with.
Expressing no remorse, he, however, defended his actions, stating that if given another opportunity, he would handle the situation differently.
In the viral video doing rounds on social media, the MP can be seen hurling insults at the Kenya Power officers before repeatedly slapping one of them.
The MP was speaking outside the EACC offices where he had been summoned.
EACC Chief Executive Officer Twalib Mbarak condemned MP Mbai’s behaviour calling on Kenyans to choose their leaders wisely.
Mbai is accused of slapping a Kenya Power engineer who was reportedly seeking to disconnect an illegal power line at the legislator’s home in Kitengela, Kajiado County.
He is set to face charges of assault and misuse of his gun. He was also disarmed of his pistol over the incident.
The MP is also a former police officer. He once worked as the bodyguard to Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua when he was the government spokesman.
He was also a bodyguard to former minster Francis Nyenze.
Mbai was on July 3, 2023, caught on camera slapping a Kenya Power engineer while threatening to shoot him for disconnecting his power line.
Mbai also reached for and tucked his gun which was falling during his fit of rage.
In response to the incident, agitated KPLC workers staged a peaceful protest from the company's offices in Epza to Kitengela police station Wednesday, condemning the incident.
The visit of the electricity workers was prompted by an outcry from the neighbourhood, where it was reported that the electricity had become dim and faulty.
A massive illegal connection to the MP's house was allegedly found.
Mbai instead intimidated the officers while invoking President William Ruto's name claiming the president had given directives that those found with illegal connections be metered before he attacked the official.
Mbai presented himself to Kitengela police station Wednesday before recording a statement with the Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI).
The KPLC officers managed to disconnect the power line to his home and his Kitui premises after arriving on the premises alongside police.
