The Azimio coalition has called on motorists to join the three-day nationwide protests by momentarily halting travel when the clock strikes midday on Wednesday in solidarity with their push for a low cost of living.

In a statement read on his behalf by Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, Azimio leader Raila Odinga asked motorists to support what he termed as sufuria movement which will involve the banging of sufurias, pots and pans.

“The sufuria movement kicks off tomorrow and continues until the battle is won. At that hour of midday, we call on motorists to stop wherever they are on highways and roads, hoot and flashlights in support of this movement,” he said.

The coalition encouraged Kenyans to picket, demonstrate and protest in their own ways in their areas of residence and urged those in Nairobi to converge at Joseph Kangethe, Kamkunji and Jacaranda grounds.

Raila called on the protesters to heed his call for peaceful demonstrations and desist from causing trouble.

“We urge our people to obey the law and respect private and public property in the course of the protest. We maintain that our activities are peaceful until the police decide to break them up with bullets and teargas,” he said.

"A couple of days ago, I was able to get into town, address Kenyans and disperse peacefully without any injuries or deaths. We were also able to have lunch and hold impromptu meetings with people at Kenyatta Market that ended peacefully because there were no police."

Azimio accused the Kenya Kwanza government of slowly evolving into a dictatorship citing withdrawal of the security detail of key opposition leaders as an example.

Raila said Kenyans should come out and resoundingly refuse to be ruled outside the provisions of the Constitution.

“We appeal to Kenyans to take very seriously the unfolding chain of events. A new dictatorship is slowly taking root. We call on Kenyans to put on their old armour of courage and work to take their country before this dictatorship takes firm roots."
