The government has listed Kisumu as one of the counties that will be affected by the closure of all public day primary and secondary schools.

A joint statement by Interior CS Kithure Kinduiki and his education counterpart Ezekiel Machogu said the closure is to enhance the safety of learners.

"Upon review of the developing security situation in the Country, the decision communicated earlier on the closure of schools in Nairobi and Mombasa Counties has been extended to all Day Primary and secondary schools in Kisumu County," the statement read in part

He added:

" For the avoidance of doubt, ALL Day Primary and Secondary Schools in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu Counties shall remain closed tomorrow. Resumption of learning in the aforesaid schools shall be communicated by the Ministry of Education upon assessment of the security situation in the course of tomorrow (Wednesday)."

The two CSs earlier said they had received credible intelligence indicating that the school-going children in the affected areas were at risk.

"The government has received credible security intelligence that criminal elements planning to unleash terror and violence on the public tomorrow intend to engage in armed skirmishes with security agencies around certain schools within Nairobi and Mombasa cities," the two said in a joint statement.

Kindiki had earlier fired a warning shot at those planning to engage in violent demonstrations on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

He assured Kenyans of their safety and urged them to go about their daily business as normal.

"National security agencies have deployed all the available resources to ensure that the scenes witnessed on Wednesday do not happen again. Anyone planning to unleash violence on Kenyans is hereby warned to cease and desist," he said
